Tea is not the only hot beverage consumed in Asia. Of course, people love their tea but, depending on the person, time of day, and season, people might want to sip on something else. Enter: Dattan sobacha

Sobacha means something like "buckwheat tea", and Dattan refers to a particular type of buckwheat. Sobacha isn't just popular in Japan but is also popular in Korea, China, and other parts of the world. Opening the bag, you will immediately be greeted by the aroma of what could be described as oven-roasted Cheerios. While you can smell the roast, the sweetness of the grain also comes through, and we found this aroma to be quite comforting. The brewed sobacha has a similar aroma, bringing out more of the roast.

Origin: China
Cultivar: Dattan, AKA Tartary

Tasting Profile

There is very light bitterness and astringency that then transforms into a delicate sweetness. The roast can be tasted throughout the experience but it is not overpowering. Optionally, you can eat the sobacha after brewing or even eat it dry.
