The chasen is the essential tool for making matcha. It is most often seen in the practice of chanoyu (Japanese: 茶の湯), also known as the Japanese tea ceremony. However, it is perfectly acceptable to use one anytime you are brewing matcha. After you have added matcha to your bowl, you move the chasen evenly back and forth as if you are drawing the letter "M" or "W". Whisk until the tea is a frothy, emerald green liquid.
